The White House announced this week that President Obama plans to sign an executive order that bans federal contractors from discriminating against employees on the basis of their sexual orientation. Currently, there are no federal laws in place that forbid workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation, although several states and local governments have enacted such laws.

We will provide an update once the executive order is signed. Until then, federal contractors should begin reviewing their handbooks, policies, and practices to make sure that they will be in compliance with the executive order once it is issued.
